2014 Trips: Dave Alvin's West of the West Grand Circle
April 11-15 LA-ALBUQUERQUE-CHICAGO:
TERRY & JO HARVEY ALLEN
Join an incredible lineup of Dave Alvin, Phil Alvin, Terry Allen & Jo Harvey Allen, John Doe and Rick Shea on an epic rail journey across the American West over the legendary route of the Super Chief. From the lights of LA County to the pueblos of New Mexico; over famed Raton Pass alongside the storied Santa Fe Trail on the highest, steepest mainline railroad grade west of the Mississippi. From Dodge City to the grain fields of the Great Plains to Chicago, City of the Big Shoulders. This is truly a journey West of the West.
The beautifully-maintained streamlined railroad cars of LA Rail will be our home for the trip. Your hosts are former Blaster, guitar slinger extraordinaire, California encyclopedia and singer-songwriter nonpareil DAVE ALVIN, brother PHIL ALVIN and longtime sideman and Guilty Man RICK SHEA. Southwestern legends TERRY & JO HARVEY ALLEN join us from LA to Albuquerque, and JOHN DOE -he of X and The Knitters- steps on board in Albuquerque through to Chicago. Add to that stupendous musical lineup an unforgettable trip back to the golden age of rail travel with freshly-prepared meals in the dome lounge car - complete with glass-enclosed 360 degree views-, lovingly restored streamlined sleepers and our own Performance Car - and you have the stuff of legend.
Why don't you join us? As of February 20, we have 3 single rooms and 1 double room remaining.
Chicago-Glacier Park-Portland-LA segment, April 15-21, with Dave Alvin, Jon Langford, David Olney, Eilen Jewell and Rick Shea is sold out.
FRIDAY 11 April
You'll feel like a 1940's movie star as we board our private cars, attached to the rear of Amtrak's SOUTHWEST CHIEF in the mission-deco masterpiece of Los Angeles Union Station. Departure is at 6:15 pm. There will be hors d’oeuvres throughout the evening as the music gets underway in the Overland Trail, our 1938 performance car, as we follow the route of legendary Route 66 east. The miles slide by effortlessly as music by DAVE & PHIL ALVIN, RICK SHEA and TERRY & JO HARVEY ALLEN continues well into the night.
SATURDAY 12 April
Breakfast on board, with a mid-morning nature program. Arrival in Albuquerque is scheduled for the late morning. Head to Santa Fe for the afternoon, or explore Albuquerque’s Old Town. JOHN DOE joins us here for the trip to Chicago. There will be a concert in the evening (tickets provided), and the train will serve as our hotel for the night (patrons wishing to stay at nearby hotels are welcome to do so; we are happy to provide suggestions). We'll have the lounge car open late for night owls.
SUNDAY 13 April
Continental breakfast is available, with the morning free for exploration. Departure shortly after noon, with lunch served on board. Get ready for a magnificent afternoon of sightseeing, through the breathtakingly narrow defile of Apache Canyon, up Glorieta Pass to the site of the most westward battle of the Civil War, past historic Pecos Mission, the Boy Scout Ranch in Philmont and over the incredible "S Curves' of Rowe. We’ll have a workshop and Open Mic and sing “Snowing on Raton” as the train crests Raton Pass on the endangered rail line that parallels the Santa Fe Trail, dinner, evening concerts and late-night song circle as we head east, past Trinidad and across the prairies.
MONDAY 14 April
Breakfast and lunch on board, morning nature program, workshop. Arrival in Chicago in afternoon, with transfers to hotel, and hotel to evening concert provided. Dinner is on your own. Evening concert, Overnight at hotel. Shuttle to evening concert provided.
TUESDAY 15 April
Patrons head home, or stay additional days in Chicago at our special group rate (advance arrangement through Roots on the Rails required).
We say goodbye to those leaving us and welcome our new passengers as we set off in the afternoon, with our cars attached to the rear of Amtrak’s storied EMPIRE BUILDER. As we pass through Milwaukee and toward the Twin Cities there will be a workshop, open mic, dinner, evening concerts and a late-night song circle.
WEDNESDAY 16 April
During the night we cross the Red River and pass into North Dakota at Fargo. The foreboding Badlands await - Devil’s Lake, a remnant of a vast glacial sea, which we pass early in the morning, got its name from a Native American legend explaining that the shattered walls and loose rocks resulted from a fierce battle between thunderbirds and water monsters. Much of the day is spent retracing the route of the Lewis & Clark expedition along the Missouri River. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served on board, along with a nature program, workshops and concerts and open mic. We wind through spectacular Marias Pass as night falls, and arrive in Whitefish, our stop for Glacier Park, in the evening.
THURSDAY 17 April
After breakfast on board, we will head to Glacier Park for a day of exploring the scenic splendor along the legendary Going-to-the-Sun Highway. We’ll return to Whitefish for dinner on our own, and be back on board the train for a 9:15 pm departure.
FRIDAY 18 April
The Columbia River Gorge is our scenic companion for breakfast, with arrival in Portland in mid-morning. The afternoon is free, with an evening concert featuring Jon Langford, David Olney, and Roots on the Rails alums Thad Beckman and Dan Weber. The lounge of the Silver Splendor will stay open for socializing after we return back to our rail cars.
SATURDAY 19 April
