Join us for an unforgettable adventure on board vintage streamline railroad cars from Los Angeles to Portland and return, April 13-19, 2012. Be one of just 45 participants on this journey the length of California and into Oregon... our tracks hugging the ocean for over 100 miles, over brawny hills, through wide fields and high plains; past towering Mount Shasta and over the stunning Cascade Range on one of the most spectacularly scenic rail journeys on earth! Your host is the master songwriter TOM RUSSELL, with musical guests ranging from the legendary RAMBLIN' JACK ELLIOTT and JIMMIE DALE GILMORE to Mekons front man JON LANGFORD and master guitarist THAD BECKMAN. There will be a starting and end night at the excellent Kyoto Grand Hotel in Los Angeles, a kickoff show at McCabe’s, the legendary guitar shop by day, concert venue by night in Santa Monica, then once on board, plenty of music, laughter and camaraderie. Naturalist Elsabe Kloppers will be with us to point out the outstanding natural features of our route. Freshly-prepared meals in our own dome car with glass-enclosed 360 degree views and lovingly restored sleeping cars from the golden age of streamliners make for an unforgettable travel experience. Music and jamming will start early and go all trip long. Get ready for a non-stop musical adventure.... all aboard!

FRIDAY, 13 APRIL

Hotel check-in in afternoon. Shuttle bus to/from evening concert at the legendary McCabe’s Guitar Shop http://www.mccabes.com/.

SATURDAY, 14 APRIL

You’ll feel like a ’40’s movie star as we board our private cars, attached to the rear of Amtrak’s COAST STARLIGHT, in the mission-style/art-deco masterpiece of Los Angeles Union Station. Departure is at 10:15 am. After lunch we’ll have a music program and our first Open Mic in the Performance Car as our train runs for over 100 miles hugging the rugged California Coast. At San Luis Obispo we cut inland, over the stunning Cuesta Grade, and as the sun goes down, dinner is served. Evening concerts follow. Upon arrival in Oakland (scheduled arrival at 9:30 pm) we add our additional sleeper (we are limited to just four cars south of Oakland; special rates apply for Oakland sleeper passengers) and the miles slide by effortlessly as music and socializing continue well into the night.

SUNDAY, 15 APRIL

During the night our train turns north through Chico and Dunsmuir, past snow-covered Mt. Shasta (a spectacular sight for early risers), and then over the Cascade Mountains, one of the most breathtaking crossings of a mountain range in the US, passing through over 20 tunnels! Breakfast and lunch on board, nature program, another workshop and Open Mic in the Performance Car. Arrive Portland, “the City of Roses,” in afternoon. The train serves as our hotel for the night (patrons wishing to stay at nearby hotels are welcome to do so; we are happy to provide suggestions). Dinner is on your own at one of the city’s many exciting restaurants. We’ll have the lounge car open late for night owls.

MONDAY, 16 APRIL

Continental breakfast is available on board, with the day free to explore this fascinating city. We will likely arrange a complimentary walking tour of Portland for those interested in the development of the city. In the evening there will be a concert (your tickets are provided) featuring our artists at the Alberta Rose Theatre http://albertarosetheatre.com/.

TUESDAY, 17 APRIL

Continental breakfast is again available on board. The morning is free, but be back to the station for our early afternoon departure. An Open Mic and a workshop are scheduled as we travel through the wide Willamette Valley, followed by dinner in the diner and evening shows in the Performance Car.

WEDNESDAY, 18 APRIL

During the night we retrace our route, with morning arrival in the Bay Area. The return journey to LA unfolds onboard with breakfast, workshops, lunch, an Open Mic, a concert finale and dinner, with arrival in Los Angeles scheduled for 9:00 pm. Our hotel accommodations are again provided.

THURSDAY, 19 APRIL

Hotel checkout and return home (additional nights at our group rate are available with advance notice).
